December Recap and January Goals

2013, baby, 2013. Can you believe it? Anyways, let’s see how I finished the year, shall we?

December Goals

  • Keep splurges to a reasonable level, food and money wise

I’m going to say I succeeded here. Was I perfect? No. But I didn’t finish the month freaking out about my bank account or feeling like I couldn’t button my jeans.

  • Buy my ticket to Paris (!)

Yes! Nonstop flight to Paris coming up! And I’m so excited! Can’t you tell?!? Because I am!

  • Finish my first article well enough for editing by my boss

So, I’m going to count this as another success, with a qualification. I finished writing a journal article, but now my boss wants to add a new section. We’ll hopefully decide how to handle this today, but in the mean time, I wrote an article start to finish.

January Goals

  • Move for 20 minutes a day
  • Save every possible dime for Paris (!)
  • File my taxes and cross my fingers for a big refund

November Recap and December Goals

And just like that, the holiday season has started. I signed up on Facebook for something called the Little Drummer Boy Challenge, where you “lose” the first time you hear the LDB and have to post the date, time and location. I got knocked out the first day when I performed at a local church’s holiday festival and another group sang the Little Drummer Boy. At least I made it into December? But first, let’s take a look at how I did in November.

November Goals

  • Get back on track with cash spending: I was horrible about that in October!

I did pretty well here, which I’m proud of. I just have to make it to the bank on the first or otherwise I get thrown off for the whole month.

  • Finish the half marathon without collapsing and/or dying

Oh good Lord, I did this, but it was hard. Cold, driving rain and heavy winds. Of course I’ve signed up for another one in January and I promise I’ll do more training this time so I’ll subject everybody to less whining.

  • Throw myself an awesome 30th birthday party

Check! I had a blast and several friends said it was the best party they’ve been to in a while. Of course the night before I freaked out and doubled the amount of food I had planned on and then my guests ate less than a third of it. Good thing I really like Mexican food and leftovers!

October Recap and November Goals

I hope everybody had a good Halloween! Mine was very low key, with a last minute get together with friends to celebrate passing that test. We went to a schmancy bar with amazing happy hour specials ($3 drinks and appetizers!), right on our town’s Main St, where we watched kids parade around in costume. I managed to throw together a costume myself from my own closet: blue button down with rolled up sleeves, red and white bandana and a swipe of red lipstick for Rosie the Riveter. Sadly, I didn’t take any pictures, but it was fun.

October Goals

  • Buy Christmas ticket home without dipping into savings

Oops! Forgot to do this. Doing it right now, so maybe it counts.

Updated: So immediately after I wrote this post, I bought the tickets for $100 less than I’ve been paying for the past few years, with fewer layovers and all aisle seats! I’m happy. Now to book a pet-sitter or kennel.

  • Sell clothes and shoes to consignment shop

Yes! They didn’t take everything, but now I know what they’re looking for.

  • Get up to 10 miles of running

Nope, but I can walk really stinking far! I have a feeling this half marathon isn’t going to go well.

September Recap and October Goals

Yay for October! I get the best parts of fall (pumpkin flavored things and beer fests) and the temperature only drops to 80 around here, which this summer loving girl adores.

September Goals

  • put 10% of my income into savings

Yes!

  • get up to 6 miles of running

Not quite. See previous post and West Nile. Wear your bug spray, y’all, and avoid going out at dawn and dusk.

  • pass my test!

Mostly? I know I passed 3 of the 4 sections, and the 4th section may be iffy, but even if I fail, it shouldn’t set back my class work or research. I’ll just have to retake it again in 6 months.

August Recap and September Goals

Hey folks! Sorry about the radio silence this week: major deadline at work plus studying meant something had to be dropped and blogging was it. But, we reached a breakthrough in my research so at least some of the pressure is off.

August Goals

  • Replace my phone and get a cheaper plan

Yes! I switched from Verizon to Virgin Mobile and reduced the cost of my plan by $20 a month, as detailed in this post.

  • Do practice problems 5 days a week

Not so much. Though now the test is less than two weeks away, so must kick my butt in gear.

  • Work out twice a week

I’m giving myself credit for this. I made a real effort to walk more with the dog, take a daily walk at work and when I got fidgety at my desk, ran the stairs from the 1st floor to the 5th. The department director thinks I’m crazy but my quads are getting toned.

  • Wear eyeshadow 6 days a week (my make-up collection rivals my toiletry collection)

Yes! I think I’m going to continue this process since it’s using things up and its a little bit of an ego boost.

August Additional Income:

  • $80 in cleaning houses. I actually lost the check, but the family kindly sent me a new one.
  • $20 in online surveys, which I’m setting aside for a good pair boots.
  • $20 in mystery shopping
  • $20 from a great switcheroo. A coworker had way too many tomatillos so he left 20 pounds on my desk. I swapped 10 of those for 2 watermelons. I gave the watermelons to 2 friends who really love watermelons and both insisted on paying me $10. Yay!

Other August Updates:

I paid off one of my credit cards! Did you hear that? I paid off one of my credit cards! That’s a total of $4000 paid off since January, and now I can snowball the extra money towards my other credit card.

September Goals

  • put 10% of my income into savings
  • get up to 6 miles of running
  • pass my test!

July Recap and August Goals

And somehow after another 31 days, it is yet another month. My mind is blown.

July Goals

  • Save $100 towards a new phone

Squeaked it in under the wire by earning the last of the money yesterday, but I did it!

  • Study 1 hour a day for my prequalifying exam

Going by averages, I hit this goal, and I’ve gotten better about doing practice problems during my breaks at work.

  • Do yoga once a week

Nope. I’ve been doing more stretching, which is good, but not a full session of yoga. 50 plus hour work weeks are a little draining.

July Income

  • $50 mystery shopping
  • $30 cleaning houses
  • $20 canning lessons

Not too bad for feeling like I didn’t work much. However,  I haven’t heard from the woman I clean for in a few weeks. Should I call her or just wait for her to contact me? Any opinions?
