October 8 Weekly Update

Happy Columbus Day! I’m kind of jealous of whoever gets the day off. Even though my weekend won’t be a three day one, it was still pretty great. A good friend got married on Friday, which translated to a night of dancing with friends, then I spent Saturday on the farm putting in fall transplants (mmm, greens) and picking tomatoes.

Money

Spending: I splurged on brunch out with a girlfriend on Sunday before spending the day cooking, cleaning and laundry. We split vegetarian eggs benedict and strawberry white chocolate pancakes. Carbs and grease are the perfect motivator.

Earnings: None, but I got sent home from the farm with an extra 30 pounds of tomatoes. I guess I’m making a lot of marinara.

School

I’m really enjoying my lone class, which is helping write me write what will hopefully be my first major publication. I also received the proofs for my first paper in a very minor journal, which was thrilling none the less. After a long talk with my boss, I’m not submitting my name for that competition, which leaves me with a far more reasonable work load this fall.

Health and Fitness

I lost another 2 pounds, through eating a lot of veggies and walking almost 5 miles a day. I’m hoping to add some weightlifting sessions into my week.

Menu

Lunches: pinto beans and fajita veggies over brown rice, roasted mushrooms and goat cheese with whole wheat pasta

Suppers: tomato soup (recipe tomorrow!), vegetable soup

October 1 Weekly Update

Holy cow: it’s October. Maybe fall will actually show up here sometime soon.

Money

Spending:  Nothing unexpected: some clothes shopping and some groceries.

Earnings: None: had to turn down a house cleaning job this weekend because I was sick. However, I scheduled them for next week when hopefully I’ll be completely back on my feet.

School

Classes are rolling and the undergrads are learning their way around campus. On the research side, things are going steadily, though I’ll need to make more progress soon. It looks like I’ll be giving a seminar in December, speaking at a conference in January and be up for an award at the same conference, which requires another presentation. Guess I’m a real scientist or something.

Health and Fitness

Boo for West Nile Virus, though as a mosquito researcher I find it somewhat appropriate that I get to experience a little of what I’m studying. Also, the appetite suppression hasn’t been entirely a bad thing. And, I did get a few runs in before I got leveled, so that’s nice.

Menu

Lunches: coconut curried lentils (from the freezer) over brown rice

Suppers: tofu noodle soup (recipe coming tomorrow!)

September 23 Weekly Update

I’m back! The horrible, no good, very bad 2 day long test is over with. While I don’t think I passed all the sections, I won’t find out the results for another month, and I’ll only have to repeat that one section in six months. For now, I can go back to normal life and return to such exciting things as having a clean home, getting some exercise and blogging!

Money

Spending: Not too bad, considering. I did get takeout once before the exam, but I made it last for 3 meals, and when I went out to celebrate with classmates afterwards, I split an entree, and we all went in on the cheapest pitcher. Mmm, PBR.

Earnings: $105 from babysitting! I’m now doing this semi-regular gig for a family with twin four year olds. They’re a handful, but super sweet and pretty independent. Also, I’ve stepped up my online surveys in hope of saving up enough to buy an awesome pair of boots during the after Thanksgiving sales.

School

Did I mention my test is over? Because my test is over! This week classes start again, and I’m only signed up for one data analysis class and a seminar. Otherwise it’s time to tie up loose ends on one project and start writing (ahh!) and get rolling on the other one. I actually went into my lab on Friday and made a great breakthrough, which soothed my bruised ego.

Health and Fitness

I managed to not completely devolve into junk food? I managed to get in my 5 to 9 fruits and veggies every day, which is stark improvement over my behavior during previous times of extreme stress. Also, having a dog is forced fresh air, which is awesome.

Menu

Lunches: Healthy eggplant parmesan (recipe tomorrow!) brown rice and beans with lots of veggies

Suppers: Cucumber and chickpea salad, veggie bowl with pinto beans, fajita veggies & salsa

September 10 Weekly Update

Hey folks, I hope y’all had good weekends! Mine wasn’t terribly exciting but terribly productive. I helped put in 400 fall transplants on the farm, cleaned up my house, and got a lot of studying done.

Money

Spending:  I’m doing pretty good on this front. I forgot my car was due for it’s smog test, but the family who I clean for sent me a new check to replace the lost one, so everything will hopefully balance out. Also, I decided to start carpooling with a classmate who just moved to my town, so my gas budget will go down.

Earnings: 1 mystery shop and 1 all day baby-sitting gig. Preschool aged twins are a handful, but entertaining.

School

Big test is coming up next week! Fortunately, we reached a final format for my computer model, so I can take a big step back from that and direct half my time each day to studying.

Health and Fitness

Weight has stayed the same, but that’s ok with me right now. I’ve been doing great with the healthy eating, and went on a run with the pup this morning. Yay for free exercise and a tour of the historic neighborhood in town.

Menu

Lunches: pesto, chickpeas and cherry tomatoes over whole wheat pasta, fajita veggies, tomatillo salsa, and pinto beans over brown rice

Suppers: Gazpacho (recipe tomorrow!) with a side of fava puree, healthy eggplant parmesan (recipe next week if it works!)

August 27 Weekly Update

As much as I have loved My Pretty Pennies’ Weekly Money Check-Up format, I’ve decided that it’s time for me to take a step forward and create my own weekly update post. Thanks for the inspiration over the months, Ginna! It’s helped me look back at how I’ve done and given me inspiration for the week ahead.

Money

Spending:  A little too much on going out. I went out for a beer with some new friends, everybody else ordered a bunch of food and when the check came, we were a little short. I decided to suck it up and throw in a few extra bucks, but next time I’m asking for a separate check. Also on Friday I had a bit of a meltdown, so for sanity reasons I opted for take-out and renting a DVD rather than cooking for a friend.

Earnings: 1 mystery shop and 1 lost check from house cleaning. Double boo on the lost check since I had rented a steam cleaner and they reimbursed me in that check, so I’m actually out money on this one.

School

I’m still freaking out about my big test in 3 (!) weeks, but that’s to be expected. My goal is to do more practice problems which hopefully will calm me down a little. My boss is also asking for a final report on one of my projects by the end of this week so we can polish for a conference next month and get it ready for publication.

Health and Fitness

I’m down 5 pounds this first week, which I’m sure is mostly water weight, but still, yay! I’m doing better about working out and this week my goal is to bike to campus 2 days, run 2 days, and work out with Jillian 2 days.

Menu

Lunches: Chinese garlic green beans with pasta and gingery carrot and cucumber salad, lima beans in pluot chutney with roasted corn and baked zucchini

Suppers: Right now the only thing I have planned is pistou (recipe tomorrow!), but I love this stuff and made a giant batch.
